“We have been visitors to Hilton Head Island for five decades. The Island was a popular destination for our family and especially for people from Western Pennsylvania.
Years later, I worked for a great American company (The Rouse Company, a retail real estate developer) who was a big believer in employees refreshing and renewing through vacation time experiences. So much so that they rented to their employees "cottages" up and down the eastern seaboard as a tax free benefit! My husband and I took advantage of this every year bringing a large contingent of friends and family every year for one or two weeks.
When my mother passed away we brought my father with us on vacation and we decided then we should buy a house; begin a new family tradition and rent it for investment. We bought our first house in 1985. Ten years later and two doors up from our home, we watched 2 Seaside Sparrow, a new spec home, being built. After the workers left each day we would sneak into the property and walk through its spacious rooms; enjoying the patterns of sunlight that brightened its interiors and we sat in the pool spa imagining its’ proximity to the beach...all the while, secretly wishing it could be ours.
We bought the house and in 2003 we moved in and furnished the home in the casual style just the way we would if it was our permanent home in Baltimore, Maryland. We love to live in a home with a large kitchen; with common areas open to conversation; and livable outdoor space that's suited to pool parties, outdoor dining and wildlife watching. We love being across from Sprunt Pond because the scene is forever changing with unique birds, flying fish and watching people casting lines in the late afternoon.
And, let me mention color in our home. We are "Lilly Pulitzer Lovers" and color is as important to us as happiness. Hilton Head’s Island’s hard packed beaches will captivate us forever and the ability to ride bikes for miles, play tennis and golf are our “go to activities”, but, it is the warmth of the natives and transplants that make our house a home. Some day we hope to be one of them!”
